The R-1210 is often described by collectors as a “pre-Portofino” because its restrained round case, slim profile, silver dial and minimalist baton markers embody the classical dress-watch design language that IWC later formalized with the Portofino collection. Although the Portofino name was not introduced until the 1980s, watches such as this represent its aesthetic predecessors and an important period when IWC produced understated dress watches powered by finely constructed, manufacture-made movements. This historical connection gives the R-1210 greater collector interest than an otherwise anonymous vintage dress watch.
