Description

Vintage Breitling Chronomat “217012,” reference 769, featuring the iconic patent slide-rule bezel marked, housed in a 36mm stainless steel case and powered by the legendary manual-wind Venus 175 chronograph movement. Produced circa 1947, this early Chronomat represents one of the most historically important references in Breitling’s catalog, serving as the direct predecessor to the Navitimer and introducing the circular slide-rule concept that would define the brand for decades to come. The warm silver dial has developed a rich and even vintage patina, complemented by applied hour markers, silver hands, twin recessed sub-registers, and striking red calculation scales that give the watch exceptional depth and character.

Serial Number: 704283

This example retains its unmistakable mid-century tool-watch aesthetic with a beautifully aged dial showing honest wear and patination consistent with nearly eighty years of history. The rotating slide-rule bezel remains intact and highly legible, while the oversized crown and early rectangular chronograph pushers reinforce the purposeful engineering-focused design language of the original Chronomat. The watch is fitted to a new, unworn, aftermarket, brown leather strap that pairs exceptionally well with the warm tones of the dial and vintage steel case.

Powering this Chronomat is the Breitling-signed Venus 175, one of the most respected hand-wound chronograph calibers of the era. Developed during the golden age of Swiss chronograph manufacturing, the Venus 175 is celebrated for its robust architecture, elegant chronograph operation, and direct historical connection to many of the most important tool chronographs of the 1940s and 1950s. Early Breitling Chronomat references such as the 769 have become increasingly sought after by collectors due to their historical significance, restrained case proportions, and unmistakable vintage character.
